NED5 is a dynamic band whose versatility with pop-rock and indie-rock, alongside a punk edge, has resonated with fans far and wide. Comprised of Carol (main vocals), Matos (main guitar), Vidu (keyboard/second guitar), Silva (bass), and Eugénio (drums/second vocals), NED5 has quickly made a name for themselves with their emotive and relatable music.

You can stream “I Would Lie” on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

From Portugal, the band initially formed during the pandemic as a school project involving Silva, Vidu and Eugénio. Their chemistry was undeniable, prompting them to continue playing together outside of school, rehearsing at Eugénio’s house. Matos soon joined the group, and after their first concert, Carol was brought on as the lead singer, allowing Eugénio to focus on the drums.

NED5’s winning single, “I Would Lie,” perfectly encapsulates their unique sound. Inspired by Carol’s personal experiences, the song delves into the emotional turmoil of unreciprocated love.

“This song is special because it truly shows what I felt during a not-so-good phase of my life,” Carol explains. “It’s a sort of realization that I could have done things differently, but it was already too late.”

The song narrates the desperation of a girl waiting for her beloved’s effort in their relationship. In a bid to get his attention, she decides it’s better to lie and hide her true feelings.

“I sat down, grabbed my keyboard, and just started letting it all out,” says Carol. “All the feelings I had stuck inside me turned into a song.” With its raw emotion and sad lyrics, it soon became the relatable song it is today.

“I Would Lie” is one of NED5’s two main singles, the other being “Dancing Dress,” which showcases their punk side. Both tracks are set to be featured on their upcoming EP, along with three new songs that will further explore their signature mix of genres.

NED5 continues to captivate audiences with their heartfelt music, and with their upcoming EP, they aim to connect even more deeply with their fans. On top of their upcoming EP, NED5 has also been focusing on live performances and opportunities. To stay up to date on NED5, follow their Instagram and stream their winning song “I Would Lie” on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.

Born in Taiwan and adopted at the age of eight, STORMIE is a Kentucky pop singer and songwriter whose hopeful and relatable lyrics along with her dreamy melodies and vocals have captivated a wide range of audiences.

First taking inspiration from artists such as Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, STORMIE began writing music during the COVID-19 pandemic. While she regularly fiddled with melodies along with her Walmart ukulele, it wasn’t until she got her first guitar that her first official song titled, “Happy One”, was born.

“During Covid was my hardest year,” says Stormie, “so songwriting became my diary and therapy.”

The winning Song of the Month track for June, “Good Enough”, will be officially released on STORMIE’s album, “Sweet and Sour”, at the end of this year.

Despite only having her phone, Apple earbuds and BandLab, STORMIE continued to create songs and refine her sound. After rebranding from her original artist name, Stormz.Melody, STORMIE’s goal was to continue bettering her music. “New mic, new laptop and new mindset,” she says.

Fast forward to 2024, and STORMIE’s song titled, “Good Enough” was voted as Space Hound Records’ June Song of the Month. Although the track now features music artists IMMUTE and SILENT, it was originally written by STORMIE and her close friend, Miley Dixon during their freshman year of high school.

“We were talking about liking the guys who don’t like us back and just wondering what would make us ‘good enough’,” says STORMIE. “The song makes me realize that no matter what we do we will never be good enough, so why not just be yourself and that itself would be good enough?”

First, “Good Enough” was more of a joke between the two artists, however as they continued to add elements, they realized it would make a great song.

“So, we called that night and she had written lyrics on her end and I sent her my lyrics from my end,” says STORMIE, “and it became one we worked on for months.”

“Good Enough” will be officially released on STORMIE’s upcoming album titled, “Sweet and Sour.” The album, which consists half of love songs and half of breakup songs will be available on all streaming platforms at the end of this year. With the release, STORMIE looks to continue bringing her personal experiences to her sound.

“Not only do I hope to connect to my listeners with my music, but I also hope to make music to heal,” says STORMIE.

Congratulations to STORMIE for winning Song of the Month and congratulations to all the Song of the Month nominees and winners of the Song of the Stream this June!

Central standard time is an independent music artist whose eclectic taste has led him to a music style that both he and his fans love. Today, the Wisconsin artist combines the genres of indie folk rock, singer-songwriter, indie pop and even elements of emo to his music, however this wasn’t always the case.

“I’ve been playing around with instruments for as long as I can remember,” he says, “but it’s been a little over 3 years since I first put pen to paper and wrote actual songs I could do anything with.”

The winning Song of the Month track for May, “I thought I’d never miss you”, is out on all popular streaming platforms now.

Although central standard time has shuffled through styles over the years, his winning song, “I thought I’d never miss you” is the first release under his new alias.

Taking inspiration from poetry and varying music artists such as Kevin Devine, Andy Hull and Tyler Mabry, the indie guitar track was written as part of a concept album that central standard time hopes to release before the end of 2024. As the second track on the album, “I thought I’d never miss you” acts as an exposition of the project as a whole.

“I came into this song thinking ‘How can I convey this message of being left behind by the people you love?’”, he says. “The first thing I had written down were the lines ‘I thought I’d never miss you’, ‘I thought I’d never lose you’, and ‘things you used to tell me.’ I really leaned into a sense of bewilderment at the fact that you miss a person or a life that you thought you’d be happy to leave behind.”

The album itself came together on paper last December in less than two weeks. After going through what he calls his “obsessive phase,” central standard time expanded on his idea. For a better understanding of his process, he walked Space Hound Records through his creation.

“I open up FL Studio and start messing around with the guitar parts I’ve written, refining them over a few takes. The other instruments fall into place as I build this framework for the whole song,” central standard time says. “The last step for me is always recording vocals. I get really nitpicky with the takes I let escape into the real song. After I’ve listened back to it a million times and begun to hate it, I decide to let it out into the world!”

With the combination of impressive riffs, a catchy refrain and one of his favorite verses, central standard time is excited to share how “I thought I’d never miss you” fits into the overall narrative of his upcoming project.

“I thought I’d never miss you” is available on all major streaming platforms. To listen on your favorite, you can tap or click here.

It isn’t just an album that central standard time has on the way. In fact, on July 21 he will be releasing another song with the pre-save link available in the near future. To stay up to date on central standard time and his upcoming releases, be sure to follow him on instagram at cst.band.

Congratulations to central standard time for winning Song of the Month and to all the Song of the Month nominees and winners of the Song of the Stream this May!

Originally from the African country of Mauritius, Immute is an Irish music artist and producer whose energetic sound has been moving audiences for close to nine years. Although primarily in the genre of rap, Immute has a versatile sound with occasional tracks in the genres of dark pop, reggae, EDM and even country. His winning song for April’s Song of the Month, “300!” is a testament to the growth of his sound over the years.

“I would say ‘300!’ represents the amount of time it takes to grind and commit in the music industry,” Immute says. “It shows how far I’ve gotten as an artist so far. Throughout the mix, cadence, lyrics and creativity, all can be shown to compare with the first song I have out on all platforms.”

The winning Song of the Month track for April, “300!”, will be officially releasing this summer.

For many tracks, Immute embraces nerdcore by finding inspiration through various movies, games or series. He makes it known that he is open to any recommendations. When it comes to the inspiration behind “300!”, Immute credits an artist who brought him motivation. “At the time, I binged an artist called Kenneth Wayne. After making a song called ‘Python’, where I mentioned him at the end of the song asking for a feature, I finally got to talk to him,” Immute says, “and that’s the time I got inspired to make ‘300!’.

Although the track was inspired by his personal music taste, to Immute, “300!” signifies individuality. “Each artist is unique,” he says, “and as long as you as an artist know you aren’t trying to copy someone else’s style, it’s what makes you stand out more.”

For Immute, what makes “300!” special is the experimentation involved when creating the track. Instead of sticking to cadences that are typical to the sound, Immute combined cadences more traditionally dedicated to other genres. “Trying to do something new is hard, but I still try,” he says.

When asked about the creative process for “300!”, Immute shares a formula relatable even to those who don’t make music. “If I have to be honest, three shots of coffee and a lot of adrenaline,” he says laughing, “but mostly when I find or make a beat I like, I get a creative rush that’s kind of like adrenaline and it makes my lyricism and energy better on the track.”

“300!” will be available on all streaming platforms this summer, following the release of Immute’s upcoming album, “SINS”, which is set to release on June 28. “Be sure to keep a lookout if you want to hear me go versatile on an album along with other artists,” Immute says.

The pre-save link for “SINS” will be available on June 1.

Congratulations to Immute for winning Space Hound Records’ first official Song of the Month and to all the Song of the Month nominees and winners of the Song of the Stream this April!

Feature articles, music reviews and interviews: These are just a few examples of what the PR and marketing industry call earned media. Not only does landing earned media bring you publicity and exposure as a music artist or band, but it does it entirely free of charge! The downside- landing earned media does involve a lot of time, organization and strategic planning. But don’t worry! We’ll walk you through how to do it with these five easy steps.

1.) Know Your Goal

The prospect of free publicity and promotion as a music artist or band is an exciting one. As a result, it may be tempting to share anything and everything. Trust us, we get it. It is, however, much more effective to focus on one goal at a time.

To do this, ask yourself what you’re trying to accomplish with gaining media coverage. Are you promoting a show? Are you trying to encourage pre-saves for a new release? Do you want to connect with your audience? Specific media types are better for specific goals. To better understand, let’s take a look at the three examples mentioned earlier: feature articles, music reviews and interviews.

Feature Articles

If you want to grow your fanbase, build a connection with audiences or share the story or inspiration behind your music, feature articles are the way to go. Because feature articles come in written form, they also involve a little less pressure as compared to audio or video interviews. Of course, you will be interviewed as part of the writing process, but because cameras and microphones won’t be recording your every word, it’s a lot less pressure. For these reasons, feature articles are great for all genres and experience levels.

Music Reviews

If there is a particular song, EP or album you are looking to promote, you might want to focus on receiving a music review. This can come in the form of a written article, a podcast or even a livestream. No matter the form, music reviews generally involve sending your music either before or after release to a reviewer who will then expand on their likes, dislikes and recommendations. Keep in mind that journalists and media professionals are under no obligation to give you a raving, five star review. In fact, they will be honest and they may be tough, but that’s what makes their content authentic and trustworthy for their audiences. Don’t let this scare you. If you’re confident in your music and its quality, go for it!

Interviews

Similarly to feature articles, interviews are great for growing a fanbase, building connections and sharing your story. Additionally, they are a great way to promote a recent song, EP or album. The focus of the interview all depends on your goal and how you pitch to the media (we’ll discuss this more in step 3). Interviews are especially great at showcasing your personality and charm. On the flip side, having a successful interview involves a lot of preparation. Because interviews generally take place through video and audio recording, you need to be media ready. In other words, you need to plan responses to questions that are both expected and unexpected.

Which of these sound like they align with you and your goals? Keep in mind that there are other types of earned media coverage you can receive, so be sure to do your research to solidify a proper plan.

2.)  Create Your Media List

Once you have established your goal, it’s time to create your media list, or your list of various journalists and media professionals. Within this list (which we definitely recommend creating in a spreadsheet) you should include names, media outlets and contact information.

To start, refer back to your goal. Next, search for journalists and media professionals who specialize in topics related to your goal. For example, say your goal is to have a feature article written. With the help of Google, search for different newspapers, magazines or blogs that write features about musicians. Specifically, seek out the ones who cover your same genre, lifestyle or location. Once you have the name of the outlet or publisher, look through specific articles to find a journalist with previous work similar to what you’re looking for. From there, search their name to try to find the best way of contact. If you’re in need of assistance, you can even ask ChatGPT to help make you a tailored media list. Just be sure to double-check the accuracy of the results.

3.) Develop Your Pitch

After you have created your media list, you can then begin developing your pitches. Using the contact information you have gathered, start to write to each journalist/media professional individually. Be clear on what your intentions are and what you’re looking to do. You also want to make each message specific and personable towards that specific journalist/media professional. A great way to do this is by mentioning and complimenting their past work. You can then relate back to your pitch explaining why your story or music would be a great addition.

It is also important to remember that journalists are storytellers. As a result, they are looking to share stories that are newsworthy, filled with emotion, and timely. It is therefore important for you as a music artist or band to communicate what is newsworthy about your music and story.

If your goal is to promote an event or an upcoming release, you can also write a press release or media advisory. Press Releases are official statements sent to the media in which information is shared on a significant topic. Media Advisories are similar to press releases, however they are sent with the goal of having a journalist or media professional attend your event. Although Press Releases and Media Advisories are short and to the point, be sure to include your 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, why), your intended release day/time and your contact information.

Along with your pitch and/or press release, you should also consider including your EPK, or Electronic Press Kit. As a musician, an EPK is your digital portfolio. It includes your bio, photos and videos, your social media platforms, your biggest achievements, your contact, reviews and links to your music. It’s a great way to highlight all you’ve done while also providing additional information that may not be included in your pitch or press release.

4.) Send Your Pitches

Once you’re happy with your pitches, it’s time to send them! But before you do, just be sure to consider these things:

Timing

Always plan ahead when sending your pitches. Especially if you want an event or upcoming release covered, send your pitch at least 3 weeks in advance. Additionally, send your pitches on the weekday during regular business hours.

Subject line

If you’re sending your pitches via email, be sure to include a captivating subject line. To do this, make sure your subject line includes the most newsworthy aspect of your pitch. It should also be short (10 words or less).

Money

Don’t worry. As mentioned earlier in the article, you shouldn’t have to pay for earned media. It’s called earned media for a reason. You have to earn your time and space. With that in mind, do NOT under any circumstances try to bribe journalists or media professionals. They have an ethical code to follow and your bribery can have you blacklisted.

If you are looking to spend money, there are people and companies who will offer reviews, interviews and features as a service, however this is not considered earned media (and is not what this article is about). These may be poorly written/produced, they may not reach your target audience and they may even be scams, so be careful!

Double Checking

Before you hit send, make sure the journalist/media professional’s name is spelt correctly, that you have the correct contact information, that your pitch is free of any grammatical errors and that you’re sending the right attachments. Otherwise, your pitch can end up right in the trash.

5.) Follow Up

Congratulations! You have now made it to step five- the final step of media pitching. Remember in the last section when we mentioned leaving extra time? Well, there’s a reason for that. You see, journalists and media professionals are busy people. They get hundreds of different pitches a week and they are working their butts off to share great content. Because of this, even if you have an incredible pitch, it is very possible for it to get lost in the madness. To combat this, you can send a follow up. If a week has passed since your initial message, kindly send another message asking if your pitch has been received. You can also share your additional contact information and/or availability to make the process easier and more convenient for them. If they still do not respond after your follow up, don’t stress it. Put your energy towards contacting other journalists and media professionals.

If you do receive a response from a journalist or media professional who is interested in covering your music and/or story, great! Be sure to respond to inquiries in a timely manner and to provide all the additional information and materials they may need. Once the journalist/media professional officially posts their content about you, follow up with a thank you message. It is also important to share their content on your own platforms. Doing so will help you build a meaningful relationship with them which can help you land even more earned media in the future.

With these five easy steps in mind, you’re now ready to pitch your music and your story to the media!
